Walk Ireland's Mountains of Mourne

An easy guide to walks through the Mournes with route maps, photographs and panoramas of the way.

The Mourne Mountains offer great opportunities to get out and enjoy wild scenery in a compact range of hills that overlook the sea on two sides. Rising to 850m, the Mournes are easily accessible with many popular walking paths leading through them.

These hills have been an integral part of life for the local people for thousands of years. As different cultures swept over the Mournes they left their imprint on land and people.

The first farmers left great stone shrines for their dead in the foothills. On the hilltops, bronze age warriors where laid in great cairns overlooking their kingdoms.

The Celtic culture named this land, leaving echoes of another time, another life. The early Christians left the window of written history open, giving us our first sight of real people through it. The rich human heritage of the Mournes gives these hills a special attraction.

The popular walks in this site are recommended as an introduction to the pleasures of hiking, none of them lasting more than an afternoon but allowing you to experience different aspects of the Mournes.
